- Assisted braking goodness Review by novicecrackclimber
We use this in the gym most of the time, the assisted braking it provides gives a bit of piece of mind and reduces the strength the break strand hand has to use. Also has a bit of possibility to be used in other less obvious situations as somewhat of an ascender or for self belay, neither of which is recommended, but sometimes you have to use what you have available.
If your using a fat old rope with flat spots, expect strange lowering and taking in slack. Thats what you get with a crappy rope. Use a good one, turn crap ropes into rugs.
The braking can sometimes be problematic when lead-belaying when the lead climber catches you off guard and moves faster than your expecting. Many people prefer to use a gri-gri for lead belaying because the locking up isn't quite as fast. Or even better an ATC or similar style belay device.
Downside is that you can't dual strand rappel with one like you can with an ATC. (Posted on 1/27/13)
