May 2, 2008, 5-8 PM The Sharp End Tour Where: Higher Ground in S. Burlington, VT
This July, Mountain Hardwear athletes Andrew McLean and Mike Libecki will embark on The Sharp End Tour, a series of eight multimedia presentations featuring unbelievable athletic accomplishments, awesome raffle prizes and amazing parties. Andrew McLean has been pursuing extreme ski mountaineering for over 20 years and has accumulated over 200 first descents around the world. Big wall climber Mike Libecki has established first ascents, traverses, and other offbeat adventures around the globe, mostly solo. Relive the excitement and admire their pursuit of adventure as Andrew ventures down incredibly steep couloirs and Mike travels to reach virgin granite walls. A portion of proceeds from The Sharp End Tour will go to benefit the The American Alpine Club and Mountain Hardwear’s recently established McNeill Nott Award. This annual grant is aimed at aspiring climbers, who like Sue Nott and Karen McNeill, focus their talents on the challenges of world class alpine pursuits. The American Alpine Club is dedicated to promoting climbing knowledge, conserving mountain environments, and serving the American climbing community. Simon Yates: Beyond the Void In a career spanning twenty years Simon Yates' climbing has taken him to all four corners of the globe and to the summits of some of the world's highest peaks. He first came to prominence as a mountaineer in 1985 after the first ascent of the West Face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes and the ensuing epic described in Joe Simpson's book 'Touching the Void' and the 2003 BAFTA winning docu-drama of the same name. Simon will take a humorous and philosophical look at some of the more notable experiences over his years as a mountaineer, accompanied by a stunning selection of slides collected during his adventures. Sanctified: A ski film about backcountry preservation Sanctified is an engaging film that celebrates the beauty of the mountains and and the experience of skiing in them, while highlighting environmental issues that directly affect the backcountry. Pristine Mountain environments are disappearing all over the world. Public lands in the United States are no exception. This winter, in association with Backcountry Magazine KGB is producing a film, Sanctified that addresses some of the environmental issues that we feel directly threaten the backcountry experience. Climbing the Classics with Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. For 36 years, the guides of Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. (RMI) have been setting a standard of mountain guiding excellence. RMI, is currently owned by Lou Whittaker and his son Peter, together with Joe Horiskey. Years of expedition guiding around the world, including some of America's first ventures into the far reaches of the Himalaya, have built a guide core that is unsurpassed. Join us for an evening with a RMI Senior Guide for a virtual climb of Mt. Rainier and several other peaks from around the world. Climbers and “armchair mountaineers” alike will find this slideshow both informative and entertaining as they give us their “guide’s eye view” of these peaks. Backcountry Skiing in East Greenland Home to countless polar bear, an ice-sculpted coastline and the Arctic’s highest mountain ranges, East Greenland is one of the Earth's wildest reaches. Throw in fresh fish for dinner and the region’s vast reserves of unskied mountains, and its no surprise that Vermont skiers and photographers Brian Mohr and Emily Johnson, along with friends, found their way back to the Arctic Circle this past summer. Don’t miss this stunning slideshow documenting their unforgettable multi-week, ski camping adventure. |
